Food Distribution Programs
Drive-Up Food Pantry
1st and 3rd Saturdays
To address the diverse and evolving needs of our community, Gospel Tabernacle Food Pantry utilizes multiple distribution models designed to improve accessibility, convenience, and client dignity.
Drive-Up Food Pantry: Held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month
The Drive-Up Food Pantry provides a safe, convenient, and contactless distribution model for seniors, individuals with disabilities, families with young children, and other community members in need. Clients remain in their vehicles while receiving services, including registration and food distribution. Trained volunteers load nutritious food directly into vehicles, ensuring an efficient process that reduces barriers to food access and promotes dignity, safety, and convenience.
Sunday Overflow Pantry
2nd and 4th Sundays
The Gospel Tabernacle Food Pantry operates a Client Choice distribution model on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. Clients may enter through the Grand River side entrance, with the line forming at 2:00 p.m. Individuals 18 years of age and older who are in line by 2:30 p.m. will be served while supplies last.
The pantry is arranged in a grocery store-style setting, allowing clients to select food and household items that best meet their dietary needs and personal preferences. This approach promotes dignity, choice, and a more personalized shopping experience.
Our Story & Why We Help
The Gospel Tabernacle Food Pantry is a community outreach ministry of Gospel Tabernacle Church and serves as a vital component of the local food security network. The church provides ongoing support for pantry operations, while food resources are supplied through partnerships with Forgotten Harvest and Gleaners Community Food Bank.
The pantry is administered by Reach One Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization led by Pastor Yvette Harper, who brings more than 30 years of experience in food pantry management, community outreach, and hunger relief services.
Located in a designated food desert on Detroit's northwest side, the pantry serves an area where residents have limited access to affordable, high-quality groceries. There are no major grocery stores within a five-mile radius, and many smaller neighborhood stores offer limited selections of fresh produce and quality meats at higher prices.
To address these challenges, Gospel Tabernacle Food Pantry has become a trusted and reliable resource for hundreds of families. The pantry provides consistent access to nutritious food and serves many residents who cannot access traditional food distribution programs due to work schedules, transportation barriers, or other limitations.
While several other food pantries operate within a four-mile radius, most distribute food only during weekday business hours. Gospel Tabernacle Food Pantry fills a critical service gap by offering distributions during evenings and weekends, making food assistance accessible to working families, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and others who may otherwise go underserved.
